Mike Tyson has revealed his children told him to “sit your old a** down” after it was confirmed he will be coming out of retirement for an exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr in September.
‘Iron’ Mike, 54, is making a sensational return to boxing just over 15 years since he hung up the gloves following a shock stoppage defeat against Kevin McBride in 2005.
His comeback bout against Jones, 51, has divided opinion amongst boxing fans, with some looking forward to seeing the two legends back in action and others concerned for their welfare.
Tyson’s own children side with the latter argument, but that isn’t enough to derail the former undisputed heavyweight champion’s plans.
“My kids think I should sit my old a** down,” Tyson said on The Jimmy Fallon Show.
“But what do they know? I'm very confident.
“They don't know how to fight, neither one of my kids can beat me in a fight, so what are they talking about?”
Tyson and Jones are set to lock horns in an eight-round exhibition, which will go ahead in California on September 12.
Amid the coronavirus pandemic, however, fans will not be present in the arena and will instead have to stump up $49.99 to watch it unfold Stateside.
For UK viewers, the fee has not yet been disclosed.
One man who is looking forward to watching Tyson and Jones roll back the years in September is former heavyweight and cruiserweight world champion David Haye.
The 39-year-old has waxed lyrical about Jones, insisting he was an inspiration for him growing up.
“Roy Jones Jr is probably the most physically gifted boxer I have ever seen,” he told The Sun .
“He was so fast and such a massive idol and inspiration for me growing up as a teenager.
“I even used to watch some of his fights in the dressing room, just moments before my own, in the crazy hope that a little bit of that magic would somehow rub off on me.
“So I really am looking forward to this match because I love Tyson too.
“Neither man is in their prime but they are then equally out of their prime, so it is a fair contest between two legends at the same level.”
